Kwigira Museum
Perched on Rwesero Hill in Nyanza District, the Kwigira Museum is a unique destination that celebrates Rwanda’s spirit of self-reliance and resilience. Originally built as the royal palace for King Mutara III Rudahigwa, the structure was completed in 1958, but the king tragically passed away before he could inaugurate it. Over the years, this remarkable building has served many roles, including housing various government institutions. Since 2018, it has been transformed into the Kwigira Museum, a space dedicated to showcasing Rwanda’s Homegrown Initiatives – programs that have played a vital role in rebuilding and uniting the nation.

The word Kwigira means “self-reliance” in Kinyarwanda, a theme woven into the museum’s exhibitions. Through photographs, texts, and multimedia displays, visitors are invited to explore the initiatives that have fostered self-sufficiency, resilience, and social cohesion in Rwanda. Programs such as Umuganda (community service), Ubudehe (social assistance), and Agaciro (national dignity) are highlighted, showing how Rwandans have taken steps to rebuild their nation post-genocide. This museum tells a story of innovation, determination, and a collective effort to create a prosperous future.
Launched on International Museum Day, celebrated every May 18, the Kwigira Museum emphasizes the “power of museums” to educate and inspire. It aims to engage young people and global visitors alike, encouraging them to learn from Rwanda’s journey to where it is now and the homegrown initiatives that fostered self-reliance. This museum showcases them so young people and visitors from around the world can learn from them.
